Its September the 3rd. A day after Google came out with its own we browser, I'm busy anticipating what kind of a piece of art, it is likely to be. Smooth, 3-d buttons and cool interface? Perhaps loads of features that never let you get out of Google's own web on the www? What kind of engine? Faster than the currently available lot of web browsers? And surely, why if at all?Not the most patient of beings, I swiftly start searching for download links on the Internet, and what better way to that, than Google's own good old, own search engine. A bit of extra time on the search and I get apprehensive.. did they after all, deem India place enough to launch their new ware initially, given the announcement that the new version would be available only in 100 countries in the beginning.
The search results open up, and my fears are qu
ickly displaced, there is one for India!
and without thinking for a second, i click on the download link...
There is no stand alone installer as of now, or maybe I did not try to find one out, so I don't exactly know how big is the setup and what time would it take on various connections. Took me about 20 minutes on a LAN proxy enabled connection by the way.
And half an hour later, I had Google Chrome, up and running!
And the initial reviews from toubleshootME would state as under...
- Yes, no prizes for guessing this one... It is another Beta from the Google stable!
- There is something different about the interface, with no toolbar or even complete window title bar, which gives it a fresh look all the same
- The smooth buttons and instinctive Picasa-like interface, is an added bonus for style enthusiasts like me.
- And, it effortlessly borrows the best of all worlds and seamlessly integrates it into itself.
- Opera like interface with refreshing thumbnails on the start page, FireFox like advanced capabilities and more, and... does IE have anything, if at all, to offer, to be copied?
- Plus some added innovations like...
- Incognito Windows - that don't, JUST don't store any browsing history, password or cookies from a session, breather for people like my dad who are way too apprehensive about their security, when trading and banking online.
- Capability of creating application shortcuts to your desktop - links that open up a new window every time you want to start and finish a task quicker.
- On the technical front, this is how you could describe Chrome -
And here is the link to the official Google Chrome blog, that might answer some of your questions regarding - why, how and where of the new browser.
Its been about an hour since I have started using the thing, and I'm already reviewing it...
So, keep checking this space for better descriptions.
